A Seahorse for the Children of Tanzania

What does a seahorse have in common with Africa's arid landscape? Much more than you'd think!

DAN Europe is counting on the generosity of the dive community to promote an initiative of great social and symbolic importance: "Ossidabile for Africa 2013"

A unique project, that unites a love for beautiful things with the desire to support a cause through fundraising. By purchasing this pretty seahorse pendant from the "Ossidabile" collection, you are making a contribution toward the funds necessary to purchase of a tractor for the Morogoro mission (Tanzania).

Run by the Collegine Sisters Holy Family, the center houses over 500 school-age children and orphans, and is maintained solely thanks to the contribution of benefactors and by cultivation of the land. To insure that agricultural activity persists and expands, a new tractor is needed to replace the old, broken-down one. When informed of the massive promotion of the initiative at the 2013 DAN Eudi show, Sister Emilia wrote to thank us, and tell us, in her shaky yet heartfelt Italian, of their dreams of a better tomorrow.

Dear friends,

This time it is Sister Emilia who is writing in the name of all the Sisters and children. Thank you for your kind letter, full of hope, that lets us always have faith that God can perform miracles in the daily life of every creature.

It is really nice knowing that even today, in a world where one hears about so many evil things, there are people who continue to do good and to believe in what is possible. Thank you to all of you who do good things to help the poor: those that are lost and cannot even ask for their basic needs because they don't know what those needs are.

We are all well here, even if we are a bit worried for the problems that are arising in Zanzibar, and in actuality, also here where we are. But we always have faith that God will continue to help us and maintain the peace as it has been until now.

As for the tractor, it is a really necessary thing for the mission, and we have many dreams to realise. In our mission we have land that we use to cultivate corn, sunflowers, and many other things that help the mission. The past few years we've had a hard time doing this work, given that our old tractor stopped working well, and would constantly lose pieces; for this reason we desperately need a new one. We can just imagine how many things we could do with it! We will cultivate the fields and then the fields of our neighbors, who until now have done everything by hand, and then we will wait for a blessing of rain from God. If these dreams really can come true, we will have at least enough corn for us and the children of the orphanage and those of the school, all for whom we currently make lunch. Our work will then be to only think of what else is necessary, instead of buying cornflour for the polenta. How nice it will be! God help us.

In regards to the price, at the moment we cannot know precisely because it changes constantly, but let's stick with what we said last year, which was 30 thousand Tsh. We'll try to be flexible because there are small and large sizes, and different brands. We only have the photo, not the price, of the best one because we still need to look at the internet, and we haven't been able to open it until now. Anyway, on the site you will see the photo of that tractor; it's the same as the one I'm sending you in attachment.

I'm tiring you too much [with this long letter]. I'll let you go here, and we will get prepare to go on a ride with the new tractor.

Much love from Sister Emilia, Sr. Caterina, Sr. Natalia, and all the Sisters and the children.

Collegine Sisters Holy Family
Email: collemoro@hotmail.com

Help us to reach a small, yet important goal: Just one seahorse to show your support!
Buy it now: All sales will be directly donated to this mission by DAN.

Info and Contacts:
http://www.ossidabile.com/forafrica

Gianluca Bertacche
+39 348 7363434

Online Seminars - Yet Another Good Reason to Be a DAN Member!

Enhance Your Dive Medicine and Safety Knowledge, in the Comfort of Your Own Home!

DAN's making its mission to spread dive safety knowledge possible by allowing all divers to participate in specialised online seminars, developed by dive medical professionals.
Now instead of sitting in a classroom, you can do everything online! Participants can choose to do seminars either in a single session, or several sessions divided over a period of time.A certificate of attendance is awarded at the end of each seminar.

This unique opportunity is made available to the whole diving public. However, only active DAN members have access to them free of charge, as part of their membership benefits. Non-members can also participate in seminars by purchasing them (20€ each).

The first seminar deals with Ears and Diving. New seminars will progressively be made available in the next few months.

How it works

DAN Members with current membership* have FREE access to online seminars on their MyDAN area, where they also find the access codes (PIN). There they are redirected to the online Educational Platform where, after login, they get access to the seminar pages.

Non-Members and Past-Members can access seminars by purchasing the respective access codes at the DAN Shop (Non-Members section). After the purchase, they receive an e-mail with the PIN code and are linked to the online Educational Platform where, after login, they are allowed to enter the seminar pages.

More detailed informations and instructions are found on the educational platform, on each of the courses' introductory pages.

Courses are highly interactive, and contain a number of checks, during and after their completion.

List of Current Seminars Available

Ears and Diving Seminar (01/2013)
This seminar will help you better understand your ears and the way they are affected by pressure. It will make you a better informed diver, leading to safer diving habits as it related to your ears and assist you in educating others about respecting and protecting their ears.
The program is enriched with video contents.

Links:

EN - https://www.diversalertnetwork.org/training/courses/online/intro.asp?course=70

IT - https://www.diversalertnetwork.org/training/courses/online/intro.asp?course=68

NL - https://www.diversalertnetwork.org/training/courses/online/intro.asp?course=90

ES - https://www.diversalertnetwork.org/training/courses/online/intro.asp?course=60

FR - https://www.diversalertnetwork.org/training/courses/online/intro.asp?course=62

PL - https://www.diversalertnetwork.org/training/courses/online/intro.asp?course=91

PT - https://www.diversalertnetwork.org/training/courses/online/intro.asp?course=89

DE - https://www.diversalertnetwork.org/training/courses/online/intro.asp?course=92

* Please Note: This feature is only available to DAN Europe Members. In many cases the investigations are still underway, though DAN Europe continues to promote and spread the culture of safety as much as possible – an integral part of its mission.

For one thing, if diving is in fact becoming an increasingly popular activity - thanks to the use of higher performance and more technologically advanced equipment and materials, and to safer and more clearly defined dive regulations - DAN continues to receive reports of negligence, slip-ups, and poor conduct on the part of those who should be guiding and assisting divers. These cases leave us in disbelief and indignation – it is in no way acceptable that trying to have a pleasant experience enjoying a pass-time can run such risks – and a renewed commitment must be made to change things for the better.

One of the most recent results of this commitment is the DAN DSP (Diving Safety Partner), Programme, an innovative programme pursuing its aim to ensure greater safety for diving centres. From its start, DAN has worked to prevent dive accidents and promote safety. Nevertheless, it isn’t possible to achieve this objective alone; it’s essential to establish partnerships with dive professionals in the field: diving centres, SCUBA schools, charters, etc.

The DSP Programme is composed of 3 levels, varied depending on the size and characteristics of the diving centre, and is offered together with a side-component called HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment), which deals with the identification of dangerous situations and evaluation of risks. Each level of the programme includes assistance and consulting for diving centres, encouraging exemplary conduct and activity - in particular the safety regulations established in the EAP - Emergency Assistance Plan - and gives recognition for those in merit who distinguish themselves for their dedication and for the results they achieve.

In this way, diving centres will be adequately prepared in the prevention and management of dive emergencies, while clients will have the assurance of receiving quality services, being able to put their trust in centres that operate in full safety.

To learn more and to participate in the programme: dsp@daneurope.org

Download the press release

In particolare, i ricercatori pugliesi mirano a:

Come partecipare

Bibliografia

Transcranial Doppler and risk of recurrence in patients with stroke and patent foramen ovale di Anzola GP, et al., Eur J Neurol 2003;10:129-35

Clinical impact of patent foramen ovale diagnosis with transcranial Doppler di Anzola GP, Eur J Ultrasound 2002;16:11-20

Transcranial Doppler in the diagnosis of cardiac patent foramen ovale di Angeli S, Del Sette M, Beelke M, Anzola GP, Zanette E., Neurol Sci 2001;22:353-6

Bilancio positivo per il nuovo Programma DAN all'EUDI Show

DAN Europe introduces its Diver Medical Technician (DMT) course

DAN Europe introduces its Diver Medical Technician (DMT) course

Better education makes safer divers. That is why DAN Europe have just added to its suite of training programmes a Diver Medical Technician (DMT) course.
The course is run in accordance with the specifications laid out by IMCA (International Marine Contractors Association) and designed under the IMCA accreditation scheme.

Why a DMT course
As any diver well knows, decompression accidents require immediate action and recompression. Proximity to a hyperbaric chamber and availability of a diving physician are crucial factors when it comes to properly treating an injured diver and thus avoiding bad consequences. Most of the times, however, diving physicians are far away and cannot intervene immediately. It is therefore essential the presence on-scene of a diving medic who has been specifically trained.
The DAN DMT course has just been introduced to address this specific need and complete the dive medicine chain.

What does a DMT do?
A DMT usually becomes the first response person on scene assisting the injured or unwell diver and remotely communicates with diving physicians to provide the necessary treatment until they arrive on scene. The DMT supports the hyperbaric chamber personnel with providing continued treatment under the care of a Hyperbaric Physician.

To Whom This Course is Addressed
The DMT course was originally designed for commercial divers, who are able to get a IMCA DMT certification.
However, the course was opened to those professional and recreational divers wanting to deepen their knowledge and understanding of dive medicine, in order to better help divers with their new skills and knowledge in an emergency.
The course will also be of interest to those who are already working in the industry as diving safety officers including surface support personnel at dive sites.

Prerequisites
Commercial Diver participants:

Must hold a valid medical certification (for Commercial Divers needing

IMCA DMT)

For IMCA offshore diver accreditation, in addition to the above, candidates must also hold an IMCA qualification in offshore diving (or IMCA recognised equivalent)

Should at least hold a current BLS/First Aid certification

Professional and Recreational Divers

Must be over the age of 18

Have at least the recreational diver standard of Rescue Diver

or equivalent

Should at least hold a current BLS/First Aid certification

Certification
IMCA – Certified Diver Medicial Technician – Valid for 3 Years
DAN Europe – Certified Diver Medical Technician – Valid for 3 Years

Course date, duration & location
Next DMT course is 30th January to 10th February 2012, and is based in Brentford, West London (UK).

How you can participate
To book you place, just send an e-mail to training@daneurope.org
You will be asked to fill in a registration form and will be given further information.
